The Outsiders by: S.E. Hinton
Activities provided in this unit are to be used in conjunction with the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. These student activities are to enrich the understanding of the novel and for the students to gain a greater appreciation for this great work of literature. The study of the setting in this novel is a great opportunity for students to look into their communities and their society. Students will also face social issues of peer pressure, child abuse, and loss of a loved one through the characters illustrated through the novel. Daily reading assignments, journal topics, discussions, quizzes, vocabulary, ect., are left to the teacher’s discretion

Essay Questions: First Impressions
Essay: Students take questionnaire and discuss first impressions. On completion of the novel the students examine what they answered and write how they have changed their minds and why.
Understanding Setting
Students research information about Tulsa, Oklahoma and use the information collected to create a travel brochure.
