The first round of TAKS testing will start on March 3rd. On this day students in 3rd and 5th grade will test in Reading and 4th grade will test in Writing. Parents can help students prepare for the test in many ways, some being getting a good nights rest, eating a good breakfast, and being in a positive mind set on the morning the test is given. The other dates for TAKS tests are listed below:
April 7--5th Grade Math
April 28--4th Grade Reading & 3rd & 5th Grade Reading Retest
April 29--3rd & 4th Grade Math Test
April 30--5th Grade Science Test
During the 2007-2008 school year, Oliver Elementary was rated Recognized by TEA. Our teachers and students have worked extremely hard all year long.
There are many good things about the TAKS test. Some people feel that all teachers do is teach to the test. This is partly true, but let me explain. The state of Texas has a curriculum which must be taught to every student in Texas. This is are very thorough guidelines. If a teacher is teaching to the test, they are also teaching the curriculum the state has mandated.
This year the 3rd graders must pass the Reading portion of the TAKS test in order to promote to 4th grade. We are currently doing many interventions for students, to allow them to be as successful as possible. If a student does not pass the test (which they will take on March 3), there will be a second opportunity on April 28. If for some reason, the student does not pass that one, we will have one final opportunity which will take place July 1.
The fifth grade will also have to pass the Math and the Reading TAKS tests in order to promote to 6th grade. The Reading test will be given on March 3 and the Math test will be given on April 7. There will also be three opportunites for students to take these tests as well.
These are upcoming TAKS testing dates:
4th Grade Writing, March 3
3rd and 5th Grade Reading, March 3
5th Grade Math, April 7
3rd and 4th Grade Math, April 28
4th Grade Reading, and 3rd and 5th grade Retest, April 29
5th Grade Science, April 30
5th Grade Math Retest, May 19
5th Grade Math Retest (3rd administration), June 30
3rd and 5th Grade Reading Retest (3rd administration), July 1
